HABITAT CREATION

An attractive alternative to tree removal, creating man-made habitat hollows in old or dead trees is increasing in popularity. When possible, we prefer to work on living trees as the internal temperatures of the hollows are more stable and the entrances can be concealed under foliage.

This solution adds value to the area by enhancing the character, biodiversity and ecological benefits of the surrounding environment.

Around 300 Australian species find home, shelter or seasonal nesting in habitat hollows.

Hollows can take years to form naturally. Using the Hollowhog, we can complete decades of Mother Nature’s work in a matter of minutes. Invented by an Australian ecologist, this carving tool allows us to carve hollows into living trees without compromising the tree’s health or strength.

We can assess your trees and identify any existing hollows, which can be accelerated with strategic pruning techniques. For trees with no existing hollows, we’ll survey the trunk or branches and decide on the best place to make one.

The local wildlife you’d like to attract and protect will determine the size and shape of the habitat hollow we create. Using precise chainsaw techniques, we’ll create a faceplate from the existing bark to cover the hollow – the front door to the animals’ new home.
